Creationism (4) “After His Kind”

When God created the universe, He mandated that all living things should reproduce after their own kind. The Hebrew word for kind is min and literally means type and, of course, kind. Well what is a kind? A kind is a group of something that all have similar characteristics. For example, a Grizzly Bear, a Polar Bear, and a Black Bear are all part of the kind of bear. Genesis is very clear that God created everything after their own kinds and ordered them to reproduce after their own kinds. Below is a list of every occurrence of the word kind in Genesis 1.

Genesis 1:11, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.”

Genesis 1:12, “And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”

Genesis 1:21, “And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”

Genesis 1:24, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.”

Genesis 1:25, “And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”

Evolution states that each animal evolved from some other kind of animal. Man evolved from apes, birds evolved from dinosaurs, mammals evolved from fish, etc, etc, etc. The phrase “after his kind” proves evolution wrong. Genesis 1 teaches that God created grass, herbs, trees, whales, birds, cattle, creeping things, and every living thing after their kind. God did not use the process of evolution to create His creatures. He spoke by the word of His mouth and a whale was created. He spoke by the word of His mouth and a monkey was created. He spoke and the crow was created. A fish cannot become a mammal, because a fish is of a different kind, than a mammal. Therefore, evolution  is not in harmony with what Genesis 1 teaches us. One cannot be a theistic evolutionist for God created each living thing after their own kind. God created it, it did not evolve into different kinds.

Creationism (3) The Order of Genesis 1

In this blog post I will look at the incompatibility between the order of events in the evolutionary model and the order of events with which Genesis 1 presents us. The differences between these two models are so vast that they can never be mixed.

Some evolutionary models portray the stars as existing millions of years before the earth ever existed. The argument that evolutionists commonly give for this theory is that the light from the stars needs millions of years to travel from their source to the earth. I will not try to explain some creationist theories regarding that, as I am an Arts student and not a Science major. (In other words, there is too much math and other complex terminology involved.) But I will suggest the book Starlight and Time by Dr. Russell Humphreys, for an explanation of how light was able to reach earth in such a short time. But let us go back to the statement saying that the stars existed before the earth. Well, this is contrary to what the Bible tells us. The earth, although it was without form and void, was created on the first day. It was not until the fourth day that the Sun, Moon, and stars were created. As, Genesis 1:14 – 19 says, “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.” Obviously, this verse proves that God created the stars after He created the earth. Also, this verse refutes a common error that some creationist have, regarding the tilt of the earth. Some believe that it was only after the flood that the earth had a 23.4° tilt on its axis, but that tilt is absolutely necessary for the seasons to exist, as it affects how sunlight hits the earth. Therefore, the tilt must have existed from the fourth day of creation, because that is when God created the seasons.

Second (to go a bit off topic) the plants were created before the sun was created. We are all aware that plants need sunlight to produce energy through photosynthesis. If each day were millions of years in length, all the plants would die because there was no sunlight. Thus, one cannot simply force evolutionary thinking onto the Biblical account of creation. One has to accept either creationism, or evolution. They cannot exist side by side.

Third, evolutionists state that the earth was created by something called the big bang, which resulted in the earth being a fiery mass of devastation. But the Bible has no such description of the earth in the beginning. As Genesis 1:2 says, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” The Bible does not describe fiery chaos; it says the exact opposite. There was water and darkness.

Finally, it has become quite a popular notion to suppose that birds are what evolved from dinosaurs. This is based on something called structural homology. Scientists will look at similar skeletal structures of one animal and compare it to that of another animal. If they are seen to be similar then they are assumed to have evolved from each other. For example it has been said that a dolphin’s fin is homologous with a man’s arm. Or that birds evolved from dinosaurs because their hip bones look similar and they are located towards the back of the animal.  Well, the Bible throws this theory out the window. In Genesis 1 we read that God created birds before He created mammals or reptiles. Birds were created on day five of creation, while humans, mammals, reptiles, and the like were created on day six.  Thus birds could not have evolved from dinosaurs. Nor could reptiles have existed before birds.

Thus, the order of events in the evolutionary model does not at all fit with the creation model. One cannot accept a bit of the Bible and a bit of evolution. They are not compatible.

Creationism (2) The Problem of Death

In this blog, I will prove that it is impossible to mix evolution with what the Bible records regarding the creation of the heaven and the earth, on the basis of death.

To start, evolution requires death. Every evolutionist must regard death as a natural process. In order for an animal to evolve, the animal must reproduce. Once it has reproduced it must die. Death is necessary because of the principle known as natural selection. Nature picks those species that are more fit to survive in their given habitat; it picks them by killing off the weaker species, or weaker version of the same species.

Now when a theistic evolutionist tries to mix the creation account in Genesis with the theory of evolution, they say that each day of creation is millions of years in length. So every known living substance which we see today, is from the process of millions of years of death and decay. The living slime that was present after the big bang, reproduced and then died. Eventually than sequence of reproduction and death produced a fish, and that produced a reptile. Eventually after thousands of different animals have died, eventually man is formed from an ape.

The concept of death does not fit inside the days of creation, no matter how long you make the days. The Bible teaches us that death is not a natural process. God told Adam and Eve in Genesis 2:17, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” It was not until everything was created and man sinned that death occurred. Death is a consequence of man’s sin. Romans 12:5 tells us, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

This death is both spiritual and physical. Spiritual in the sense that man lost all his ability to do good. Man through the fall became a slave to sin; he can only do good by the grace of God. This death is physical because as soon as man sinned, death was introduced into the world, as 1 Corinthians 15:21 tells us, “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.” Physical death is a product of man’s sin.

Therefore, it is impossible to mix evolution and the Biblical account of creation. Death is not a natural process and did not  occur until man sinned.

Creationism (1) The Days of Genesis 1

This year I am taking a course in astronomy at university. As my astronomy teacher is a theistic evolutionist I thought I would examine some proofs for a young earth; in order that I might come to a better understanding of  the arguments for both sides and that I might share that understanding with my readers. As Augustine says in Epistle 7,  “I profess to be one of those who, by profiting, write, and by writing profit.” To start with we will examine the days of Genesis 1. Many argue that these days are actually not literal days as we know them, but days that lasted millions of years. That is millions of years of God guided evolution. However, once one actually looks at the Bible it is quite clear that the Lord created the entire universe in a literal six days.

To start with, we should examine the definition of the word day in the Hebrew. The Hebrew word for day is yom and it has multiple meanings. It can mean a literal 24 hour day, the period of time in which it is light outside, or an indefinite period of time, whether short or long. However, in the context of Genesis 1 we know for certain that this means a literal 24 hour day. This is because, every time that yom is used with a number such as first, second, or third (as in “the evening and the morning were the first day” Genesis 1:5) it always means a literal day. One example of the use of yom with a number and meaning a literal day is in Leviticus 14:39, where the Levites are being instructed on how to deal with leprosy. “And the priest shall come again the seventh day, and shall look: and, behold, if the plague be spread in the walls of the house.” That is quite plainly a literal day. It always happens that whenever a number is used with yom a literal day is meant. Theistic evolutionists however make the one exception for Genesis 1 and that is inconsistent.

Further, each day is clearly defined as an actual day in Genesis 1. In Genesis 1:5, we read, “And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” Each day is said to have an evening and a morning. A million years does not have an evening and a morning, but a twenty-four hour day does.

Also in Exodus 20:8 -11, when the Lord is giving the law to Israel, God says that he created the world in six days. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Here God is comparing the work week to the days of creation. As God worked six days so man must work six days and rest on the seventh

The idea of evolution also does not fit with the order of creation. God created plants on day three, however He did not create the sun until day four. If we are to say that each day is millions of years, how could the plants survive without the sunlight? It does not make sense unless the days are literal days.

Therefore, we must believe that the days of creation are true twenty-four hour days. It is a mistake and disbelief in the Word of God and His almighty power to say that they are millions of years long.
